I believe that…
- Teachers play a significant role in a child’s life. This is a privilege that should not be taken for granted. Therefore, teachers are role models for children and should act with integrity.
- Every child is an individual. A teacher should make time to get to know each child as a unique person. They bring their own unique experiences, personalities and abilities with them and teachers can learn from these.
- A teacher needs to be aware of a child’s physical, emotional, psychological and social needs as well as their educational needs when planning lessons.
- All children have the right to learn in an environment that acknowledges and respects their culture, faith and values.
- All children have the right to be taught with respect, kindness and discipline. Children deserve to feel safe while at school and teachers can facilitate this by encouraging children to build positive relationships with their peers.
- Teachers should have open and consistent communication with parents and carers to inform them of what is happening in their child’s classroom and learning journey.
- Teachers should work in co-operation with parents, carers, other teachers, support staff and health professionals (when necessary) to ensure that children are provided with maximum opportunities for success.
- Children need to be given safe opportunities to fail at some tasks and be supported in their failure by teachers who can help them to learn from the experience.
